Side-Income Cost Calculator
A spreadsheet that works out what a side income actually pays you per hour, after the costs nobody mentions.
Most side income advertises a headline rate. Then there is fuel, fees, supplies, the platform cut, and the hours you spend that nobody pays for. Put your real numbers in and the calculator shows you what is left.
What you get
One file. Open it and the first thing you see is a Start here page with three steps. Inside that file:
- The calculator, which works in Excel, Google Sheets and LibreOffice
- A Rate benchmarks sheet with real sourced figures for the common kinds of work, and what each selling platform takes
- A How this works sheet covering the assumptions and where they break
Honest notes
This will sometimes tell you the answer is no. That is the point of it. The worked example starts at a $36 headline rate and lands at $21.76 once everything real is counted, and knowing that before you start is worth more than nine dollars.
The rate benchmarks are Canadian figures, checked September 2026, with the source printed beside each one. If you are elsewhere the dollar amounts will differ, but the shape holds: what hands-on work pays against skilled work, and how much of your money a platform takes. The calculator itself works anywhere, and the sales tax threshold is a box you set for your own country.
No income promises. What you earn depends on you, where you live, and what you charge.
